        Security

Security is always a necessary evil no matter where you may be, either in the physical or virtual (internet) worlds

  • Keep valuables items such as cash, cameras, electronics out of sight. If they don't know you have it, then they won't be tempted to steal it.

  • Where possible securely attach items to your person, keep all bags and pockets fastened closed. This deters pick pocket and snatch and grab crimes.

  • If in a hotel temporary or accomodation, place valuable in a safe, if available. If no safe is available then keep desirable items and valuables out of sight, preferably in a locked heavy suitcase

With the above being said, please note we have never felt threatened or been a victim of any crimes, touch wood it will stay that way. However we know personally of people who have been victims of an attack (snatch and grab) in broad daylight in a public place, laptop stolen from a hotel room and a burglary.

        Navigation

As engineers we took pride in ourselves on being pretty technical but never used or heard of offline maps and navigation. Prior to Cuenca we always had unlimited mobile data connections, while in Cuenca we discovered google offline maps

If you have wi-fi in your accomodation download maps of areas you plan to be to your Android device.  Since then we never get lost around town, obviously this applies to anywhere you may be. Live navigation even works without data connection on some phones.
